Insider Tips
Local knowledge to maximize every minute on the island
Pro Tips — Maximize Your Island Time
Skip the bridge traffic — ride in!
Staying off-island? Rent electric bikes and ride from Perico Preserve or Robinson Preserve across to the island. You'll save 30+ minutes of bridge traffic and see beautiful nature trails along the way. Plus, the island is only 7 miles — perfect for biking!
Get your fishing license before you arrive
Florida requires a saltwater fishing license for anyone 16+. Buy it online at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com before your trip — it's instant and saves you a stop. A 3-day non-resident license is about $17, 7-day is $30.
Want to keep snook? Time your trip right
Snook harvest is only open March–April and September–November on the Gulf coast. If catching and eating fresh snook is on your bucket list, plan around those windows. Catch & release is available year-round though!
Beat the crowds — be an early bird
The island is magical before 9am. Beaches are empty, parking is free and available everywhere, and the light is perfect for photos. By 10am in season, the lots fill up fast.
Ride the free island trolley
The free AMI trolley runs the full length of the island. Park once (or don't drive at all) and hop on/off all day. It runs every 20 minutes and connects to the mainland MCAT bus system too.
Shoulder season = best value
Late April through mid-May and November offer the absolute best combination: great weather, fewer crowds, lower rental prices, and excellent fishing. Locals call these the 'golden windows.'
Every sunset is on the Gulf side
The entire west coast of the island faces the Gulf of Mexico — every beach gets a sunset show. Bean Point (north tip) is the most dramatic because you can see water on three sides.
Chasing tarpon? You need a special tag
If you're targeting the legendary Silver King, you'll need a $50 tarpon tag in addition to your fishing license. These fish are strictly catch & release unless pursuing an IGFA record. The passes around Anna Maria are world-famous for tarpon May–July.
Explore the back bay by kayak
Rent a kayak and explore Sarasota Bay, Palma Sola Bay, or the mangrove tunnels. You'll see dolphins, manatees, and incredible bird life. Morning is calmest — winds pick up after noon.
Summer storms are predictable — use it
June through September, afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork around 3–4pm. Plan your beach time for morning, grab lunch, and use the storm hour for shopping or a nap. Evenings clear up beautifully.
Park at Coquina Beach for free all day
Coquina Beach at the south end of the island has the largest free public parking lot. From there you can trolley anywhere on the island or just enjoy one of the best beaches.
Bring water shoes for the flats
The shallow grass flats are incredible for wading and nature watching, but shells and occasional stingrays mean water shoes are a smart move. Do the 'stingray shuffle' — slide your feet, don't step.
Moon Phase Calendar
How lunar cycles shape fishing, tides, and magic on the island
Lunar Calendar · Anna Maria Island
Moon phases govern fish feeding, tides, and night-sky magic. Full and new moons create the strongest tidal pull — and the best fishing on the island.
Jan
Full moon on the 13th pulls big trout to the flats. New moon tides on the 29th are ideal for snook around structure.
Feb
February full moon triggers big sheepshead spawning aggregations around the piers. Fish dock pilings at first and last light.
Mar
Spring full moon triggers the first major snook movements of the year. Redfish also school up on grass flats during moon tides.
Apr
The April full moon is one of the best of the year for snook on the beaches. Tarpon begin to appear in the passes during this moon.
May
PEAK MOON MONTH: The May full moon kicks off world-class tarpon fishing in the passes. Snook spawn under the full moon on the beaches.
Jun
Full moon in June amplifies the legendary snook beach run. These fish push onto the beaches at night under moonlit conditions.
Jul
Full moon tides create extreme current in the passes — perfect for tarpon fishing but wade carefully. Snook stack on passes and inlets.
Aug
New moon tides in August produce the strongest current — lady fish and jack crevalle go on a rampage around the piers.
Sep
September full moon marks the end of summer and the best redfish fishing of the year. Snook re-open for harvest this month.
Oct
October full moon is prime for giant redfish schooling on the flats — sight-fishing at its best. Spanish mackerel arrive with the moon tides.
Nov
November full moon brings aggressive spotted seatrout to the grass flats. Sheepshead also show up around the piers in force.
Dec
December Cold Moon creates strong winter tides. Sheepshead and black drum congregate around warm-water structure. Excellent trout fishing.

Tidal Calendar
Anna Maria's mixed tides — know the water before you go
Tidal Calendar · NOAA Station 8726724 · Tampa Bay
Anna Maria experiences mixed semidiurnal tides — typically two highs and two lows per day, though summer brings a near-diurnal pattern. Knowing the tides is the single biggest factor in a successful fishing trip or a perfect beach afternoon.
